Creativity isn’t a side quest; it’s a vital signal from the body’s inner compass. We explore how the sacral chakra weaves together intimacy, fertility, and the urge to make things—then map those insights onto the real chemistry of hormones like testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone. With a blend of Ayurvedic perspective and modern physiology, we break myths, clarify roles across genders, and show how energy and biology can point the same way.

We start by grounding the sacral center in everyday life: relationships that feel nourishing, cycles that make sense, and small acts of creation that reset the nervous system. From there we dive into what these hormones actually do—muscle function, mood support, bone health, implantation—and why proportions matter more than labels. You’ll hear why estrogen can be a performance booster, how progesterone steadies the system, and why women also benefit from testosterone. We address contraception choices, cycle variability, and the importance of tracking your own patterns instead of chasing one-size-fits-all advice.

On the energetic plane, we discuss kundalini as a powerful but nuanced force, the risks of over-activation that can look like chasing intensity, and the simple practices that create safety and flow. If you’re drawn to practical steps, we share approachable tools: carnelian and tiger’s eye as tactile anchors, citrus and rose oils to tune the senses, and a short breath ritual to reconnect with your lower center. Expect a thoughtful, stigma-free look at how creativity, connection, and hormones shape your mood and your day.

SPEAKER_00:

All right, hello, and welcome back to the Art of Healing podcast. This is Dr. Charlize, and I am so appreciative of you joining me for this episode. If you are here live, thank you so much. If you are listening to the recording, welcome and so good to connect with you. Your show notes will have any important links that we discuss during this episode. So this is some of what I pulled from the self-guided Reiki journey. We are going to explore the connection of the sacral chakra, hormones, and emotions. One of my favorite topics that is so worth exploring, especially if you are someone who feels that you are struggling with some kind of hormonal strain, imbalance, disruption. This is a topic that's really worth your time in delving into and understanding. There are seven major energy centers in the human body, and really more than that, but the ones that we are referring to are the chakras, which are coming from the ancient medical practices and knowledge of Ayurveda. And the one that we will focus the most on during this talk is the sacral chakra. It is the energy center that is deep within the body, somewhere in the pelvis. It is an energy center. So there's not, although it is associated with the ovaries, the uterus, the fallopian tubes, and associated with the testicles in man. So this uh connection in the sacral chakra, in the studies of Ayurveda, the sacral chakra is associated with our relationships, our connections, our fertility, our ability to have intimacy, sexuality, and also with our creativity, that this energy center is related to all of these. And in a way, when you think about your real life, things like relationships, particularly intimate relationships, are deeply tied to sexuality, ability to be fertile and grow your family. And fertility is the biggest physical manifestation of creativity. Although creativity does not always have to be creating another person, it could be journaling, it could be writing a book, it could be painting, it could be gardening, it could be redesigning your home. But as it turns out, creativity is a human right that we must have. We don't do well when we can't have the ability to create. Doesn't mean you always want to create. Sometimes we don't always want to do that, but when we do, it is very important to our humanity to have that aspect of ourselves. So creativity can be small acts such as journaling or doodling, all the way up to creating relationships, a home, or creating and growing a family. But creativity and actually taking something and changing it or creating something is very important to our health. It doesn't always have to manifest into the next bestseller or the next great American novel, but maybe it does. The sacral chakra is associated with physical organs, those being parts of the kidneys and their functioning, including getting waste out of the body, getting excreting waste, the spleen and its ability to filter the blood. The spleen has a few different functions from blood production, then also filtering the blood, the bladder itself, and then the ones that will be focusing on the ovaries and the testes, and their role is endocrine glands, hormonal producers in our body. The sacral chakras associated with these physical organs, but again, we're blending two concepts. The sacral chakra doesn't have a physical organ, something that we would be able to take a picture of, an X-ray or an MRI. So it is a truly physical center. That's the concept. A little bit difficult because we're blending these two, but the physical organs we associate with this are the reproductive organs, bladder, kidneys, and spleen. So the slide I'm showing here unfortunately came out a little bit large, but the three hormones that come from this center, primarily from this center, are testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone. Hormones are chemical messengers. So the role of a hormone is for to send a message chemically from one organ or system of the body to another with the purpose of affecting how that organ or system operates. So hormones come from many parts of our bodies. And in this podcast and in the next several, we're going to explore many of these hormones. But even with our in-depth exploration, that still doesn't eclipse and encounter all of the many hormones that our body produces. But for our discussion, the ones that we'll focus on here testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone, these are three hormones that are associated with gender or sex. They are especially important when you are first conceived and your body is differentiating between the two genders. They will become important again as your body progresses into puberty and the secondary sexual uh characteristics develop. So that's growing height, but then possibly growing facial hair, the voice changing, and for female gendered individuals developing the reproductive cycle that leads to menstruation and ovulation, a menstrual cycle. These are produced in the sacral chakra, but we'll also explore what happens in the adrenal glands in the next few podcasts, because that's actually where they come from. But this is what also produced and metabolized. And these hormones, we do think of having an emotional aspect to them that we somewhat characterize, stereotype. And in common language, it gets a little too simple. So we think that only men need testosterone. It turns out that women need testosterone as well, and that women get benefits from testosterone, much like men, including improving their muscle function, their oxygen carrying capacity, proving how the senses work, how the brain works. Of course, the difference in is because of gender is how much of that testosterone in proportion of estrogen and progesterone. Estrogen, both sexes actually need, and there are many types of estrogens. Maybe we'll get into that in a later podcast, but we'll just call them estrogen for now. Estrogen, men actually produce and need estrogen as well. But for women, this hormone is important as far as cyclic function. So during the menstruation cycle, it needs to fluctuate depending on where you are in the cycle. If you are not cycling because you are on birth control, that means that you are getting some type of estrogen in you from some source that will suppress ovulation. And depending on where you are and what's going on with your body, that may be a major benefit to suppress ovulation because you don't want to get pregnant. But for some women, suppressing the cycle and ovulation is needed to prevent detrimental menstrual cycle symptoms from PMS all the way up to the PMDD, the severe menstrual cycle symptoms. So it's variable on that. Some women don't do well with the extra estrogens. Some women, it is beneficial. It really depends on where you are. And then, of course, estrogen plays a role in becoming pregnant and during pregnancy and thereafter. Estrogen is associated with feminine qualities, but I learned in a conference I attended a few years ago that it turns out estrogen is also a performance hormone, that it actually enhances muscle tone and makes muscles contract stronger, which makes sense because estrogen levels are high during pregnancy, and the muscle that needs to contracts the uterine muscles is very much needed. So that's pretty cool to know. Estrogen can also be beneficial to the mood in men and women. Now, the proportion of how much you have, it depends. But men need some estrogen too. And for both sexes, estrogen is needed for your bone health, but especially in women to keep our bones healthy and strong, we've got to have that estrogen. Progesterone, also one of these hormones that is needed in both sexes. So it's easy to think that when we talk about hormones, only women are affected when in fact men need them too. Progesterone's role in our body is also cyclic for female gendered people, most important prior to ovulation, and then at the beginning of a pregnancy where it's needed for the implantation of an embryo. From an energetic standpoint, the sacral chakra is associated with a powerful energy concept from the Ayurvedic lineage called Kundalini energy. The kundalini energy is an energy source that lies dormant in the sacral chakra and can be awakened by an individual who is pursuing their spiritual path, disciplined, actively pursuing it, and has grounded their energy very well, will access this kundalini, leading to a kundalini awakening. And when this happens, it's believed to bring about a major transformation of consciousness, opening up all of the energy channels, a truly amazing change. I personally have not experienced a kundalini awakening, but I have read the experiences of people who have, and it's incredible. It's very incredible what they experience. Now, I've heard it's profound. I've also heard that it can be big. It can be about a lot of changes from what I've read from various experts. But it's in this sacral chakra that this kundalini energy is residing. So supporting the sacral chakra and supporting being in touch with this creativity and connection and making sure that part is open enough appropriately that you feel engaged and you can connect, but not overly open, because that's a concept that in my own studies I read about that overly connecting to the sacral chakra may look like hypersexuality. So that might be engaging in sexual activities or seeking that as an outlet to something else, when in fact the other thing is what you need to deal with. When I'm marred in life with sometimes overly sexual media, that may be what we're seeing, that maybe anxiety is being channeled there or depression may be channeled there. But the tools that you can use to help working with this area, crystals are always a great addition. Many people already own their own crystals, may not know that you can use them when you are working with certain energy centers. Any crystal that has an orange tone to it or sort of a reddish tone, so that could be bloodstone, calcite, carnelian, or tiger's eye. Aromatherapy or essential oils are a great way to tune into that part of your body, especially if particularly you may have some trauma around this area, or this is something that you know it's time to work with, but it's been difficult. These citrus scented essential oils are powerful. Jasmine, which is very expensive. So in jasmine's an investment, and once you buy a bottle, I do recommend keeping it in a dark place, not opening it more than you have to, because this is a very expensive oil, but it's a very powerful, wonderful aroma, but just a big investment. Ilang Elong doesn't cost as much, it's actually really blends well with a lot of other oils, and it's associated with the sacral chakra. And then rose, which is another oil that can be very expensive. So if you do choose to purchase it, I do say keep it very carefully. Don't open the bottle more than you have to. Really use it medicinally, so use it sparingly so that it can last as long as possible. So for more information on working with this energy center and making that connection with this energy center, your emotions and your hormones, I have a the chakras and hormones downloadable. And in your show notes, I will put the link to get that copy. And then also you'll get a little bit more information on why we are talking so much about this connection because we plan to do this in earnest. We plan to have a live program really exploring hormonal health, the energy centers, going places that really no one else is going right now because it's kind of difficult and weird to talk about, but it really needs to happen. So you'll get more information about that in your show notes. So make sure you have a link there and it'll take you to the page to download that ebook on chakras and hormones. So thank you so much for joining me for this recording. And if you are listening in your show notes, make sure you leave a review if you think about it. I know you're busy, you're on the run, but those reviews help. And then also just kind of a heads up where we used to do the show about once a week. For the next few weeks, we'll be getting together a little bit more often, probably every Monday and Wednesday. That is the show recording. But if you're listening, we connect live pretty frequently and probably will be doing it about once a week. So if you would like to join in live during the recording, meet guest, meet me. You're absolutely welcome. Signing up for my newsletter is the best way to do that. So, again, thank you so much for joining me, and I will see you next time.
